About Melina
I am currently a Master's student at UIC in the Department of Communication. I enjoy working closely with UIC staff, faculty, and students. Over the past two and a half years, I have had a lot of experience working with undergraduates. First as a teaching assistant for two writing intensive course and more recently as a public speaking instructor.
I am passionate about teaching and research. Most of my research is centered around issues of race, gender, and representation. Specifically, I am interested in understanding the extent to which communication technologies afford marginalized communities a voice. My research is motivated by personal experiences, I use it as an outlet to understand the world around me.

I dismiss my students by saying "go make mistakes". I believe that students are taught to adhere to social norms thus causing them to suppress their voice. Making mistakes provides opportunities for self-exploration and growth. During my time as a teaching assistant and public speaking instructor, I have found that students are typically driven by grades. This is a great incentive to have, but it can be very limiting and hinder one's growth. I encourage students to make mistakes so that the will take the risks, learn, and move forward.
I customize each lesson to suit the needs of my clients. I will step up a meeting to discuss your needs and then create a personalized lesson plan that will help you achieve your goals.
