Sophie is a second-year student at The Juilliard School, teaches French Horn and plays the piano with 15 years of experience. Her lessons are all about making things easier and therefore more fun!

About Sophie
Sophie Choy (b. 2005) is a horn player from Hong Kong currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree at The Juilliard School under Erik Ralske, principal horn of the Metropolitan Opera. She began piano at age five and horn at six, studying with Sally Ng and Lin Jiang before moving to the U.S. in 2020 to attend Interlochen Arts Academy, where she studied with Corbin Wagner and Lauren Hunt. At Interlochen, Sophie received the Jack (John R.) and Mary Lou Hood Endowed Academy Scholarship and won the 2023 Concerto Competition, performing with the Academy Orchestra. She has participated in summer programs including the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute and Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Orchestra. This summer, she attended both the Sarasota Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival and School as a horn fellow. Before moving to the U.S., Sophie performed internationally with the bands and orchestras of Alliance Primary School and Diocesan Girls’ School, touring Finland, Taiwan, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, and China. She has earned multiple awards in interschool competitions and the ABRSM exam series.

My lessons are mostly for beginners to intermediate learners. A typical lesson could look like fundamentals check-ups and repertoire. If you are thinking of college auditions I could help with excerpts, how to build connections, and even the application process. I wouldn't consider my journey to Juilliard smooth-sailing and therefore understand the struggles of all aspects (LOL!), and am always happy to help!
