About Dr Luis

About Me I am Dr. Luis Carrillo-López, a bilingual educator and language specialist with over 30 years of experience teaching Spanish, English, and ESL across higher education, adult education, and professional training settings. I hold doctoral degrees in Education and Managerial Sciences, along with advanced graduate training in Linguistics, TEFL/TESOL, and Educational Management. My academic credentials have been formally evaluated through NACES-recognized agencies, ensuring they meet U.S. standards. Throughout my career, I have taught at universities, community colleges, adult education programs, and the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Language Institute, where I worked as a Spanish Language Professor, Diagnostic Assessment Specialist, and Oral Proficiency Interview Rater. This experience has given me a deep understanding of how languages are learned, assessed, and successfully applied in real-world contexts. My teaching philosophy is professional, student-centered, and results-driven. I create a respectful and supportive learning environment where students feel confident, motivated, and challenged. Lessons are carefully structured, goal-oriented, and tailored to each learner’s needs, whether the objective is academic success, professional advancement, or everyday communication. Students appreciate my clarity, patience, and high standards, as well as my ability to explain complex language concepts clearly and practically. I take pride in being reliable, well-prepared, and responsive, and I am committed to maintaining the highest level of professionalism in every interaction. If you are looking for a knowledgeable, experienced, and dedicated language instructor who will take your progress seriously, I would be honored to work with you.

My tutoring approach is personalized, proficiency-based, and results-driven. I combine ACTFL and ILR standards with communicative and task-based instruction to ensure learners can use the language confidently in real-life situations—not just memorize rules.

I adapt each lesson to the learner’s goals, level, and learning style, using:

Guided conversation and structured speaking practice

Clear grammar explanations applied immediately in context

Authentic materials (news, workplace scenarios, academic texts)

Targeted feedback and formative assessment

Cultural insights to enhance comprehension and communication

I emphasize active participation, practical language use, and steady progress.

A Typical Lesson Plan

Each lesson follows a clear, effective structure:

Warm-up & review – Brief conversation or task to activate prior knowledge

Objective focus – Introduction of the day’s communicative goal (e.g., workplace English, academic Spanish, oral fluency)

Guided instruction – Vocabulary and grammar explained clearly and efficiently

Practice & application – Speaking, listening, reading, or writing tasks tied to real-world use

Feedback & correction – Immediate, supportive feedback to improve accuracy and confidence

Wrap-up & next steps – Review progress and set goals for continued improvement

Lessons are structured yet flexible, ensuring efficiency without pressure.
