About Gail

I am a Special Education Needs Therapist who has successfully homeschooled children, offered one-to-one educational therapy for children from pre-school age, right through to and including mentoring adults in life-skills and helping young adults cram for exams and achieve life-transitions successfully.

BIBLE SCHOOL & COLLEGE
My earliest training in education was as a Child Evangelism Worker at Glenvar Bible College, after which I did a baccalaureate in Christian Education at the Wesleyan College under Dr. Esther Philippi.

SUPERINTENDENT AND CHRISTIAN-EDUCATION PA
My first post was as Sunday School Superintendent coupled to becoming the Personal Assistant to the Dean of the Bible College, Dr. Colin Doyle.

These early years forged and informed my passion for children's learning.

EARLY LEARNING SPECIALIST/PRE-SCHOOL TEACHER
In the mid- to late-80's a friend and I collaborated with parents to open an Early Learning Centre in Roodepoort, called The Little Lighthouse (catering from 2 - 7 year-olds) in a special US-Based Christian Curriculum, called A BEKA BOOK. In our school 2 and 3 year-olds were taught to read and write (gross motor skills, large letters, colors and these gradually shrunk till the letters were the size of pre-school and primary writing, to accommodate the immature visual systems of young learners). Our children thrived and the primary schools which later received our kids all commented on how superb their early learning skills were. An A BEKA BOOK foundation meant that our children could identify letters, numbers, sequence them, know number rhymes, the alphabet song, could do one-to-one correspondence with numbers, did creative art and sand- as well as water-play, stretching and bouncing and rolling and hopping exercises all wriggled skills into little feet, hands and fingers till our children were competent at the 3 R's and beyond. Story-times were exciting, learning not just Biblical truths and facts, but also learning about the great, wonderful Creation and all in it. We had weekly theme-tables, discussed topics about life and built character, manners and a love of parents, friends and life.

INTERNATIONAL SEN TRAINING - GERMANY/SOUTH AFRICA
I went to Kandern, Germany in 1995 to train as an Educational Therapist with the National Institute for Learning Disabilities (then) now (Differences) presented by NILD, Norfolk, VA, USA at the Kandern Christian School in the Black Forest. This was my foundation training and after Kandern, I did NILD's Advanced therapy training in South Africa too. In total we were trained in 27 key techniques to help learners succeed and overcome learning gaps, learning disabilities and turn weaknesses into strengths. Many of our learners showed an up to 30 point increase in IQ (both verbal and non-verbal) over a 3 year period - these changes were documented on standardized IQ tests.

PRINCIPAL/HEAD-TEACHER
Along with running 2 nursery and pre-schools as Principal and Head-Teacher, I enjoyed working one-to-one with children with Special Educational Needs.

FULL-TIME EDUCATIONAL THERAPIST - SEN
This eventually became my full-time profession from 1997 till now - I still work with a learner (now an adult of 30), who started with me in his pre-school years. I worked with him throughout his entire primary and secondary school career, helped him study and succeed to write his matric with support. Today he works for an Australian Rugged Terrain vehicle company in SA and manages their parts-ordering system and does general office support. He drives a 4x4 though he has cerebral palsy and is an excellent aspiring photographer.

This and so much more is possible when we start believing in ourselves and we know that mountains are there to climb, and valleys are there to find refreshment. We can hone skills and a dyslexic brain is a good one, often an exceptional one which can be trained to work better and better across a lifetime.

Lend me your ears, entrust your brain and will to succeed to me and let's forge excellence one skill at a time that will last a lifetime!
