About James
I am a rising third-year Statistics Ph.D. Candidate at Stanford University. Before starting graduate school, I did my undergrad at Columbia University, holding a B.A. in Computer Science-Mathematics and a B.A. in Statistics. Beginning in undergrad, I was a TA for 14 courses with highly positive student evaluations. I also received a Departmental Teaching Award in Stanford (2021), which is only given out to at most 5 students in the department (of size 50). In 2021, I was invited to give a guest lecture in C++ programming designs in Columbia University.

My tutoring sessions are highly individualized and adaptive, so the approach I take with students vary. However, I always aim to present the essence of the material, giving intuition and clear, succinct explanations. If the student is stuck on understanding a concept, I simplify the problem so that the student can take small steps to the original problem. These are some of the common philosophies I hold with any student. You should expect our sessions to cover less topics, but more detail. The goal is that I teach you a minimal set of important tools so that you can build your own understanding of new topics.
I have over 6+ years of experience teaching math, computer-science, and statistics, starting from first year of undergrad, teaching college and graduate-level material. I have received teaching awards based on student and faculty nomination and usually have the highest rating among other TAs. Some notable comments are that my explanations are extremely clear, rigorous, intuitive, and that I am very approachable!
I am most interested in tutoring college and graduate students. Please reach out if you need help with statistics!
