About Lia
I am an IB grade 10 (year 11) student in London studying English. I am passionate about using language as a tool within and beyond academia or the classroom. Personally, I believe that I truly began to enjoy learning French, one of my second languages, after beginning lessons with a tutor who made the subject more practical and applied to real life. Having this experience outside of school changed it from an academic subject to a skill which benefits me in acquiring more skills and opening more doors for future opportunities.
For students, it often appears as if the world revolves around school. It seems as if knowledge we learn is only relevant for completing the current task and achieving a top grade for the approaching report. It's not until later that we see how important education is for life. I would like to promote this to students by making language a passion and a way to connect with other people across the world.
Having experience learning in Japan during an academic exchange, I am familiar with many who have an insufficient English education. Although SPAG and writing may be practiced often, I believe that there is a lack of conversational teaching in developing the oral and listening skills. I believe that this is a common experience internationally, causing arguably the most critical skills for language mastery to stagnate in growth. Having regular conversations in the language can increase one's confidence in applying it. It also shows the student how it can be used practically for communication, potentially encouraging them to chase opportunities to study and work abroad. Language opens up doors!
