About Marissa
I’m a Los Angeles–based writer, editor, and published author with over 15 years of corporate experience helping people communicate clearly and effectively. I specialize in working with students who want to improve their writing skills, boost confidence, and develop their unique voice. My approach is personalized for each student. Whether your child needs help organizing their thoughts, strengthening grammar, or preparing for the SBAC, I create structured, step-by-step lessons that make writing feel manageable—and even enjoyable. I encourage students to think critically about what they read. It’s okay to question a character, disagree with a poem, or form a strong opinion—that’s how thoughtful readers and writers are developed.
What I help with:
* SBAC test preparation
* Informational/Opinion/Narrative essay writing
* Creative writing (including imagery and storytelling) grammar, editing, and sentence structure
* Study skills and organization strategies for struggling students. I work especially well with students who feel overwhelmed or disorganized. As someone who struggled with organization myself, I teach practical systems and “hacks” that actually stick.
I believe every student is a writer. My goal is to help them discover their voice, build confidence, and develop skills they’ll use far beyond the classroom.

I do in-person and zoom tutoring for all grades, through college, though it depends on the subject (I cannot do math & science for high school & college, but can do papers, essays, & study help for college students).
My zoom rates & packages are below. In-person rates are higher and vary, and will have to be discussed, but range from 50-80 per hour, depending on subject and age of child, and how far I'd be traveling.
General Teaching Method: I’m a calm, focused tutor who tailors each session to a student’s personality and learning style. My approach is supportive but active—I challenge students to think critically, stay engaged, and build lasting confidence in their reading and writing. I work with students in grades 4–12.
Typical Lesson Structure 1. Check-In (5 min) Quick conversation about stressors, workload, and habits to meet the student where they are. 2. Set Goals (2–3 min) Agree on a clear focus for the session. 3. Plan the Work (5 min) Prioritize assignments and identify where support is most needed. 4. Guided Work (20–25 min) Student writes while I provide real-time feedback, coaching, and direction. 5. Review & Mini-Lesson (5–10 min) Refine work and teach key writing or grammar concepts. 6. Wrap-Up (3–5 min) Recap progress, outline next steps, and provide parent updates if needed. 7. Close (1 min) End with encouragement and clear direction for continued progress.
