About Katharina

An active chamber musician and soloist, Katharina Uhde has won First Prize at the Concertino Praga Competition (2001), First Prize at the Jeunesse Musicale competition “Verfemte Musik” (2001) and Second Prize at the Charles Hennen String Quartet Competition (2002), and performed in concert halls including Cologne Philharmonie, Hill Auditorium Ann Arbor, Lutoslawski Hall Warsaw, Rudolfinum Prague, Kolarac Belgrade, and at numerous festivals. Katharina has performed solo works for violin and orchestra under Kenneth Kiesler, Pavel Baleff, Dennis Friesen-Carper, and Johannes Moesus, and collaborated with Martha Argerich, Ivry Gitlis, and Ulf Hoelscher. In December 2023 she is going to record Joseph Joachim’s Violin Concerto No. 3 with the Radio Orchestra Belgrade and Aleksandar Kojic for the Soundset label. This will be her second Joseph Joachim album for violin and orchestra. Katharina won the Concerto Competition at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2004. During her studies there (2004–2009) and at Duke University (2009-2014) she has developed her specialization as an expert on Joseph Joachim, whose compositions she has been championing since 2011. She has commissioned a work — Roscath -- for violin and orchestra from Ryan Molloy, Maynooth University, which will be recorded in 2027 with Kenneth Kiesler and the RTÉ Orchestra Dublin.

I specialize in violin coaching. I am a professional violinist, a tenured associate professor, and a coach.

I work on violin AND mindset. I believe that being the best we can be (being what's POSSIBLE versus being the default) can be trained.

I will adapt my teaching to your needs. If you have no specific wishes, I'll go in this direction:

I layer my teaching:
1) score study
2) embodiment work
3) technical things that need to be gotten out of the way

The goal of my teaching: playing in a way that suggests transforming ourselves into BEING the music. Radiating the music inside and out, so that what you play is in your body, on your face, and you are NOT in your own way. Rather, you've studied the score, understand phrasing, and are ready to be fully expressive on your instrument.

Find out more about Katharina

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

When I was 3 years old, my mom gave me a violin to "try out" and I was hooked! My twin sister got a cello. We could play music together from the earliest days.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

YES! Nemanja Radulovic! I love his passionate playing. Other than that I can listen endlessly to classical piano music.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The most difficult thing is to trust the teacher and take FULL responsibility for what they are trying to teach you -- make it your own within a few days, that's my dream scenario. For example, when I teach someone violin vibrato I love when they just follow my lead, do all the exercises daily, and take responsibility for everything I gave them last lesson so we're able to move on to the next lesson.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I think all instruments are hard to master once you're looking for a high level.
  • What are your keys to success?

Patience and believing in miracles. See yourself as A POSSIBILITY! That's all. Never, ever close the door for possibilities. It's ok to be unsure whether you can or cannot do something... Just never say never.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favorite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why

Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, and any violinist:) I love Sinatra's and Jackson's attitudes to the recording studio .... They were so incredibly professional. I love talking with any violinist about anything violin-related.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Make coffee and hit your practice room -- wherever it is -- and take breaks with buddies (even virtual ones). I remember my days at the University of Michigan. Coffee and practice buddies made all the difference to me.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

    I love teaching every day!
