About Mick

I have been giving lessons for 20+ years to many students from both private and state schools.
My portfolio is full of excellent references.
I have experience of both old (GCSE) and the new (IGCSE) teaching requirements, standards, methods, approaches and syllabuses in all the above 4 subjects across all different examination boards: EDEXCEL, OCR, AQA and also across the wide spectrum of the above mentioned types of U.K. Schools.
I am always at the forefront and sometimes even ahead of what is currently taught at the top Private Schools.
For example: IGCSE course is an Internationally recognised GCSE with particularly demanding, comprehensive and complex syllabus in comparison with ordinary GCSE standard. (As widely reported in the media and The Daily Telegraph on the 25/10/2006.)
With my tutoring, my pupil had successfully passed his Maths IGCSE test in Cambridge and obtained his IGCSE certificate even 1 year before one of the top Private Schools (Dulwich College) introduced IGCSE in their syllabus!
(Not to mention that he was the very first student sitting the exam for the IGCSE Science at the IGCSE Edexcel centre in London once it opened.)
As the IGCSE requirements are gradually being phased into the U.K. educational system (Private Schools were the first to adopt it), I am already proficient with IGCSE in order to meet my pupils’ increased demand for my assistance with their IGCSE studies.

Sometimes, at the start of my tutoring, some of my pupils are not motivated and suffer from the lack of confidence both in themselves, their knowledge of the subject and their ability to cope with the influx of the new information.
In addition to understanding their psychological profiles and personalities in order to assess the best teaching method that suites them, my enthusiasm and passion for the above 4 subjects and my continuous drive towards excellence motivate my pupils and therefore enables them to achieve their full potential both as the pupils and as the young adults.

As the IGCSE requirements are gradually being phased into the U.K. educational system (Private Schools were the first to adopt it), I am already proficient with IGCSE in order to meet my pupils’ increased demand for my assistance with their IGCSE studies.
Private tutoring has enabled me to vastly expand my knowledge of the 4 subjects which I teach, and also to explore various approaches to explaining the topics in order to meet the needs of the most demanding pupils.

Instead of teaching a “dry” lesson, I always lay out the relevance and the background of the topic and I also introduce the short history that led to the particular scientific/ mathematical discoveries.
Also, whenever I can, I draw from my own broad international experience and expertise when I teach, in order to broaden the horizons of my pupils who always find this very interesting and helpful.
I make connections across the very wide range of subjects from Maths to Arts to History to Science to Archeology,.. in order to make the topic interesting and relevant.
I found BBC4 programmes (ranging from Classic rock/pop albums and discussions of recording techniques to electricity, ceramics, optics, sociology,..) very helpful not only because of a new information, but also of the way in which it is being presented - both the big and the small picture of the topic is always presented/explained.
I approach lessons in a structured way, with great emphasis on key words and appropriate use of English language in order to improve the pupils’ descriptiveness, and command of English language.

My flexibility coupled with my attention to detail always pays off with improved pupils’ knowledge and confidence which enables them to get drawn into the lessons and gain new knowledge.
I have good interpersonal skills coupled with the ability to prioritise work with strong desire for excellence.
