It is very important to establish a trusting relationship with the student, and go at a pace that works. As the relationship grows, the student can take more reasonable and effective risks that will help them to learn subject matter and develop self confidence. A key part to tutoring is teaching the student how to improve executive functioning skills by teaching them visual and metacognitive strategies. What makes me a very good tutor is my patience, and my intuition as to when to slow down and when to encourage the student to challenge themselves.
