About Afrika

Hi! I'm Afrika, a 28-year-old TEFL-certified English tutor from Scotland. I love working with people — getting to know how they think, what excites them, and helping that come through in a new language.

By day, I work in research, but outside of that you'll usually find me upside down in aerial silks, out rock climbing, or nerding out about wildlife, physics, or psychology (I'm always up for a tangent if it means we get to chat about something you're genuinely interested in). I've also spent time designing and running lessons and workshops for young people, which is where I first fell in love with helping people find their voice.

I believe learning a language should feel less like a chore and more like a conversation — one where you're building real confidence, one session at a time.

My training has enabled me to create lessons for various levels from pre-intermediate to advanced, covering speaking, listening, reading, and writing. I also draw on experience designing and delivering lessons and workshops for young people aged 13–24 in a previous coordinator role, which taught me how to keep sessions structured but genuinely engaging.

Alongside that, I work in a research role where clear communication is essential — I've co-authored a peer-reviewed scientific paper and presented my research at an international conferences, so I know what it takes to explain complex ideas simply and confidently, whether in writing or out loud. I'm comfortable adapting how I explain things depending on who I'm talking to, which I think matters just as much as subject knowledge when it comes to teaching a language well.

About the lesson

Learning a language is deeply personal — it's tied to your goals, your confidence, and sometimes even your identity. That's why I don't believe in one-size-fits-all lessons. Together, we'll build a plan around what actually matters to you, whether that's speaking confidently in everyday conversations, preparing for work or study, or just finally feeling comfortable putting yourself out there in English.

I'll bring structure and clear progress markers so you can see how far you've come, but I'll also make sure lessons feel like a real conversation, not a lecture. My goal is for you to leave every session a little more confident than you started and to actually enjoy getting there.
