About Maren

Hi there! I am an experienced, enthusiastic tutor of English as a Foreign/Second Language (EFL/ESL) with over 8 years of experience working with diverse learners.

I completed an honours undergraduate degree in English literature at the University of British Columbia (UBC) with a year abroad at the University of Edinburgh. I maintained Dean's List status during all four years of my degree, amassed over $35,000 in faculty- and government-nominated scholarships, and completed a 30-page honours thesis in subversive feminist literature which achieved a score of 93%. During my degree, I worked with UBC as an academic writing consultant, where I helped undergraduate students ace their courses and secure prestigious scholarships and graduate school admission offers. My students excelled in all disciplines of academic writing, including fine arts, engineering, nursing, psychology, anthropology, microbiology and beyond. I help students pursue excellence in their academic writing skills, and make sure you ace that essay, win that scholarship, and secure that dream admissions or job offer.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I have spent several years mentoring and teaching students whose goal is to improve their English language fluency. I have helped learners from across the world excel in their language learning, including students from Italy, Poland, China, Japan, Taiwan, Romania, Georgia, Spain, Argentina, Brazil, South Korea, and more. I have spent the last two summers working at a language school in Oxford, UK, with teenaged learners who travel from across the globe to pursue excellence in English. No matter your native tongue or your English proficiency level, I am ready to meet you where you're at and achieve your goals together. To help me help you better, I'm currently working on my DELTA, a highly prestigious masters-level certification in teaching English as a second language. This certification includes a nuanced knowledge of SLA pedagogy, intimate awareness of the intricate features of English grammar, and the most contemporary and avant-garde teaching methodologies.

My vast range of professional, academic, and personal experiences come together to make me a fantastic support in a multitude of areas. Teaching is where I feel most at home, and I take incredible joy in watching my students learn, grow, and push themselves to their highest potential. I’m excited to meet you!

About the lesson

As a teacher, I strive to make your learning experience not just helpful, but meaningful. In my lessons, I encourage you to think about your "why": why are you here? Why do you want to achieve the goals you've set for yourself? If you're here, you have a reason to be here--and I want to congratulate you on making it to Superprof in the first place. That shows a real investment in yourself and your skills, and that step is the biggest and most important one you'll ever take. When you take the next step into starting lessons, I will encourage you to keep that feeling of investing in yourself, and approach our learning with your 'why' in mind. Maybe you want to perfect your English so that you can make deeper connections with the world around you. Maybe you want to polish your writing skills to get into that dream degree or program. Or maybe, you're just here to see where your own potential can take you. Either way, your 'why' matters to me, and I want to help you follow that why to the greatest version of yourself.

Lessons with me start with you. I might have outlined ideas for how to best help you--whether that's with grammar-based exercises, free-writing to get your creative juices flowing, or simple conversation practice--but ultimately, you know your learning style better than anyone. I'll work with you to find out your learning style, your goals, and your past experiences with learning, and from there, we'll create a bespoke learning plan catered to your needs and goals. I strongly believe that learning happens best when you're in your body, emotionally regulated, and at peace with yourself, so we'll start our lessons with some grounding exercises and setting intentions to ensure you get the most out of your time with me. Then, we can get into it--whatever 'it' might look like for you.
