About Xavery
¡Hola! Si hablas español y quieres aprender suajili, ¡soy tu profesor ideal!
My name is Xavery Mpombo from Tanzania. I’ve been helping learners from around the world speak Swahili since 2019, and over the years, I’ve developed effective, enjoyable methods and resources that truly help students make progress.
I’m certified by the National Swahili Council of Tanzania (BAKITA) and hold a bachelor’s degree from Sokoine University of Agriculture.
I speak Swahili, English, and Ngoni, and I’m also learning Spanish, so I understand what it feels like to learn a new language from scratch — the excitement, the challenges, and the joy of small wins. My lessons reflect that understanding.
My students describe me as open-minded, enthusiastic, and kind, and I strive to make every class a safe and positive space to speak, make mistakes, and grow with confidence. Having learned foreign languages myself, I create lessons that are practical, structured, and encouraging.
I help learners improve conversational Swahili, including listening and speaking skills, with lessons tailored specifically for you. I respect all beliefs, work with all age groups, and am flexible to accommodate different levels, time zones, and busy schedules.
Whether you’re starting from zero or working to sound more natural, I’ll help you actually speak Swahili — one enjoyable step at a time.

As an experienced language teacher and learner, I believe that becoming fluent in a language involves several steps and some hard work — but if you put in the effort, you will see progress. I adjust my teaching to fit your unique learning style and keep a log of your progress so you can see how far you’ve come. This log also helps us review past materials and plan what to learn next, keeping everything organized and efficient.
My classes are friendly and relaxed, so you feel like you’re talking to a friend while learning. I’m committed to my bold mission of building the largest digital library for foreign Swahili learners in the world, so my lessons are always evolving with new resources.

Perfect! I really enjoyed my lesson with Xavery. He listened to what I wanted and pitched the lesson at the right level. He was friendly and professional. Unfortunately I was unable to continue the lessons as life became too busy but I would recommend Xavery
- I really enjoyed teaching Liz. I understand that life can get busy sometimes, and she wasn’t able to continue with lessons, but I hope that one day she will. She has visited Tanzania and already has a good understanding of our culture, which made our lesson even more enjoyable. Asante sana, Liz!Xavery's response :
Perfect! Professional, friendly, knowledgeable. All you need to take your Swahili to the next level.
- Enrique is one of my favorite students to teach. He loves understanding things in depth and asks thoughtful questions that help me personalize his learning journey. He has made excellent progress, visited Tanzania, and continued his lessons after returning home. I always look forward to our lessons together — teaching him is a true pleasure.Xavery's response :
Perfect! An enthusiastic and great teacher! He had lesson plans and exercises to complete after each lesson. We'll structured lessons. I greatly appreciate Xavery's patience and knowledge!
- Working with Daniella has been an absolute pleasure.Xavery's response :
Perfect! Amazing turory. So far I have had 7 lessons with Xavery and everything is making much more sense, I am already able to say some things in Swahili . He gives you a lot of tools so you can practice from the phone (similar to Duolingo). It takes practice and learning vocabulary (like with any language).
The fact that he speaks Spanish also makes a difference since it helps me understand from a different mindset- What an absolute pleasure it has been to work with Susana. She speaks multiple languages and already has a strong familiarity with East Africa, thanks to her boyfriend being from Tanzania. Teaching her was always fun and engaging. I especially enjoyed that she continued her Swahili lessons with me even after visiting Tanzania and returning home — a true sign of her dedication and love for the language.Xavery's response :
Perfect! Xavery is an outstanding tutor! He is so helpful, attentive, and such a great teacher. I’ve made so much progress already because of him. Totally recommend using him as your Swahili tutor.
- Wow — where do I even begin to talk about Colin! I can honestly say I’m proud to call him not just my student, but my good friend. Over time, he has become like family to me. We’ve met in person twice — last year and again this year — when he and his wife visited Tanzania. He even brought me a gift and invited me to their wedding welcome party, where I got to meet both of their families and friends, dance, eat, and just have an amazing time together. Those are memories I’ll never forget.Xavery's response :
Colin’s dedication to learning Swahili is truly inspiring. His progress has been remarkable — he’s determined, consistent, and deeply passionate about mastering the language. Beyond that, he’s such a high-achieving person in so many areas of his life, and honestly, he’s become one of my role models.
Asante sana, Colin, for everything — your friendship, kindness, and incredible spirit. You’re not just a great student; you’re a great friend.
Perfect! Xavery was well prepared, enthusiastic, patient and very professional.

- I always look forward to our weekly lessons with Amy and her young daughters. I truly appreciate their dedication to learning Swahili despite Amy's busy work schedule and the demands of being a mom—a role that is both challenging and unpaid. The girls are absolutely fantastic, and I thoroughly enjoy teaching them. Learning a new language can be quite a long and challenging journey at times. It takes time to start seeing progress, and I can see they are making significant strides.Xavery's response :

Xaverys lessons have helped me connect with my family in just three months, i recommend the class for anyone learning traditional swahilli.
Xavery is a fantastic teacher and his lessons are always fun. I needed someone to help me start speaking Kiswahili again after a gap of 25 years and I found the best teacher that I could have hoped for. He is incredibly knowledgeable and did all that he could do develop my speaking skills as well as improving my grammar. Xavery has become a friend that I will stay in touch with and see on my visits to Tanzania. Highly recommended.
I could go on and on about Xavery. First off, I have to say he is the most skilled Swahili teacher I have used in the last 5 years. His lessons are tailored to each student's goals, language level , and learning style. I saw a great improvement in my ability to speak Swahili in a short period of time after I started working with him. In addition to being an incredible teacher, he is kind, friendly, respectful, and punctual. I can't recommend him enough to anyone hoping to learn English or Swahili.
