It depends on the purpose: what exactly is the desired outcome? In my opinion, the best is to teach spoken Tamil by just starting to converse in Tamil. This is how any child learns the mother tongue. If the purpose is for example to get one’s life partner to learn Tamil enough to feel comfortable with other relatives and Tamil friends, then this is all that is needed. If the person is interested in learning Tamil so as to enjoy the literature or settle and work in Tamil speaking area, then it is necessary to teach them the script enough to be able to read. If they have already picked up enough of conversational skills, it will be a lot easier to teach them to read appropriately - proper pronunciation which is not easy to learn by just learning the letters of the alphabet. Writing or typing comes as the last part if the person is an adult and wants to become an author in Tamil.
