About Shaya
I took French Immersion as a child.
Continued taking grammar and vocabulary courses at Simon Fraser University.
Travelled and studied at Université Sainte-Anne in Nova Scotia.
Completed my PDP in French Immersion Elementary Education in 2018. Graduated from UBC.
Completed PB + 15 in Social Justice Education.
Taught in Surrey school District as a French Immersion Teach on Call for 4 years.
Taught grade 7 Late French Immersion in Surrey School District.
Taught Core French 8 and 9 in Surrey School District.
Taught on call FRENCH IMMERSION New Westminster and now teaching on call while doing my Masters in Education in Sea to Sky School District.

My professional teaching career across schools and ages have taught me that each student requires a unique approach. I would give one an intake form to gather pertinent information ex) previous experience with french, goals, best past practices. The intake is designed to provide me with; level of French, teaching philosophy required, ideal tools required, style of activities, lesson plan order, homework activities.
My tool box has only grown over the years of teaching French. I love visuals, physical manipulation, using patterns, games, spoken immersion and extra practice activities to be completed before the next session. Accessing suited activities is why I love what I do. As classroom teachers have their hands full ( I can understand) it it’s important to have a teacher that can differentiate and tailor lessons to the learning style and personality of the learner. This is blossoming process is an honour to witness and be apart of :)
A typical lesson/session will vary exponentially based on the learner. In general, I will begin with a game, review, homework review, introduction to new concepts using multiple means (video, PowerPoint, puzzles, flash cards, sorting activities) After different demonstrations of the task by me I will give the learner a task. I will asses this and adjust my next steps and begin working on the areas of improvement. I love to end a lesson with a review of what was learnt. Followed by an explanation and demonstration of the “homework” activities. Depending on the students level the entire lesson would be held in French. English only used when NECESSARY. This can be off putting to some. However, this approach is proven to improve language skills at a staggering rate.
Once again, I have experience as a French Immersion Educator in the district of Surrey and New Westminster teaching French Immersion K-7. As well as French as a Second Language K-9. I have done my education at University of British Columbia and I am currently working on my masters in education :)
