About Tal

My path to tutoring wasn't a straight line, and I think that's exactly what makes me good at it. I built my academic foundation at Mount Royal University before continuing on into law school, so I understand firsthand what it takes to succeed across very different levels of education — from mastering the basics to navigating the demands of professional-level study. That range lets me meet students wherever they are, whether they're learning to love reading in grade three or preparing for a university exam.

Alongside my studies, I spent many years coaching hockey and developing training programs from the ground up. Coaching taught me something that a classroom alone never could: how to break down complex skills into steps that actually stick, how to keep someone motivated through the frustrating middle part of learning, and how to build real confidence, not just short-term results. I bring that same mindset to tutoring. I'm not just here to help you finish an assignment; I'm here to help you understand the material in a way that stays with you.

That's really the core of how I teach: I connect new material to concepts you already understand, so learning feels less like memorizing and more like building. Whether it's a math principle, a piece of writing, or a dense academic reading, I aim to leave you with a lasting understanding, not just an answer.

I take this work seriously and treat every session with the same professionalism I brought to my own studies and coaching programs. You can expect someone who is reliable, prepared, and genuinely invested in your progress — not just for the next test, but for how you approach learning going forward.

About the lesson

My teaching approach:
I believe tutoring works best when it meets students where they actually are, not where a textbook assumes they should be. Before diving into content, I spend the first session figuring out how a student thinks: do they need to see a concept visually, work through it step-by-step, or talk it out loud? From there, I adjust my explanations rather than repeating the same approach and hoping it eventually clicks.

For math, I focus on building the "why" behind a method, not just the steps, so students can handle problems that look different from the ones we practiced. For English (reading and writing), I work on both mechanics and voice — helping students write clearly while still sounding like themselves. For university-level courses, especially business and finance, I bring real coursework experience: I know what professors are actually looking for in assignments and exams, not just the theory in the textbook.

A typical lesson:
Quick check-in: review what's due, what's confusing, and what came up since our last session
Warm-up: a quick problem or question to activate prior knowledge
Core teaching: new concept or skill, broken into small pieces with examples
Guided practice: student works through problems while I coach in real time
Independent practice: student tries one alone so I can see what's actually sticking
Wrap-up: recap key takeaways and set a clear focus for next time or homework

What sets me apart:
I graduated as a perennial Dean's Honor Roll from Mount Royal University in the BBA program, majoring in Finance, so I can teach both foundational math/English and university-level business courses
I explain things multiple ways until something clicks, instead of repeating the same explanation louder
I actually enjoy the subjects I teach, which makes lessons feel less like a chore and more like a conversation
I focus on building independence, not dependence — my goal is for students to need me less over time, not more
