About Michael
I'm a Marine Biology graduate from the University of Portsmouth, having graduated with First-Class honours in July 2026. I'm currently developing two peer-reviewed papers with my supervisor on the basis of what I wrote for my thesis.
I've also completed an Extended Diploma in Land and Wildlife Management (Level 3), a Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification, and I self-teach subjects like R programming, SQL, and cooking alongside my formal studies. This gives me experience in both academic and vocational pathways, having worked across several industries.
Whilst I'm new to formal tutoring on this platform, I have experience explaining complex scientific concepts to non-experts through my personal training work and through supporting fellow students during my degree.

My approach to lessons:
I focus on building genuine understanding rather than rote memorisation. In practice, this means starting each session by checking what the student already knows, identifying specific gaps, and working through examples that expose the underlying logic rather than just the answer. I use real-world context wherever possible — biology becomes memorable when linked to actual organisms, ecosystems, and applications rather than abstract diagrams.
Techniques and methodology:
Diagnostic questioning at the start of each session to identify weak subjects
Working through past paper questions to expose exam technique alongside content
Breaking complex topics into small, manageable steps
Using visual aids and diagrams where they clarify rather than complicate
Regular checking for understanding rather than lecturing at length
Setting focused practice work between sessions where appropriate
Typical lesson length:
One hour is standard and works well for most GCSE and KS3 topics. Longer sessions (90 minutes) can suit intensive revision or university application work where we're drafting personal statements together.
