About Sam
Hey there, I'm Sam! It is a pleasure to meet you. I am a graduate of Life Sciences from McMaster University, with a specialization in Chemical Biology and am now pursuing my master's degree. I have worked as a tutor and teaching assistant throughout the course of my studies, and have plenty of in-lab experience as well!
As students, we've encountered all too many gimmicky ads for a subject that really has no shortcuts. As tempting as it may be, I can promise that spending some time on the rudiments will make for a faster (and much less painful) learning experience as we go.
As a recent graduate, and more importantly, a prior teaching assistant and tutor, I know the student experience first-hand. I have played an active role in my classes, and know all too well the common pitfalls of students in organic chemistry or chemistry courses. As well, I have experienced my own fair share first hand, and thus, also know how to turn a scary semester around.
I have plenty of experimental, in-lab experience, and thus, you can count on me to bring in real-life examples to help you better understand and approach your own lab projects. I am a firm believer in establishing strong foundations, and with it, I guarantee that each following new topic becomes faster and easier to grab on to.

Chemistry, and namely, organic chemistry, is known to be daunting. However, I firmly believe that with the right approach, it is accessible to anybody. I am familiar with the common pitfalls of students in the subject, and am committed to steering students in the right path. My lessons are highly adaptive to your unique learning style. That said, as a general framework, with me, you can expect a highly organized lesson plan, where we can establish clear goals for each week from the get-go. Then, we will work through mini-lessons, with a focus on the areas you and I have prioritized. At the end of each lesson, we will work through examples together, and I will provide you with a short, but representative set of problems, which we will go over in the next session. I encourage asking as many questions as you need, while balancing time constraints. What sets me apart as a tutor, is that I do not shy away from difficult questions, and will never pressure you to accept a surface-level answer which does not make quite sense, instead of working through it with the patience needed to leave you with a true understanding of the topic.
An example range of high school topics includes atomic structure, molecular bonding (VSEPR), balancing equations, IUPAC conventions, physical chemistry (ideal gases, entropy, chemical kinetics), and introductory organic chemistry.
Or, for university students, a range of topics includes but is not limited to molecular representations (Newman, Haworth, conformational analysis), acid/base chemistry, name reactions (Diels-Alder, Bayliss-Hillman, Wittig), asymmetric synthesis, redox, Michaelis-Menten plotting, and so on. Additionally, I am available to help you work through tricky NMR and mass spectra for compound/isomer identification!
If needed, I am also available to help with analytical chemistry. This includes merits of experimental framework, standard operating protocol, quantitative methods including LC-MS or GC-MS, redox titration, UV-Vis, and so on.
My lessons are geared towards high school science or chemistry students (including AP or IB chemistry) up until university level organic chemistry and/or biochemistry courses. Looking forward to working together!
