About Cleo

I am a Mathematics tutor with 10 years of experience and a PhD in Applied Mathematics. I have taught over 420 students from primary level through to postgraduate mathematics across all major curricula and examination boards. My doctoral background means I engage with mathematics at a genuinely deep level and can explain concepts from multiple angles until I find the approach that works for each individual student. My Mathematics teaching is grounded in the conviction that mathematical difficulty almost always traces back to an earlier foundational gap, and I spend the early sessions of any new student relationship systematically identifying where this gap lies before any forward progress begins. My diagnostic approach uses carefully constructed problem sequences that reveal not just what a student cannot do but precisely why, because treatment of the right gap at the right time produces dramatic improvement far faster than broad content review. Calculus teaching in my studio begins with the conceptual meaning of a limit and derivative rather than the mechanical differentiation rules, because students who understand the mathematical ideas behind the procedures maintain their skills across novel problem types far more reliably than those who only remember rules. My statistics teaching consistently addresses the distinction between descriptive and inferential statistics and the logical relationship between probability, sampling, and inference, because most student confusion about statistical tests stems from failing to understand what question each test is answering. Proof is introduced systematically at A-Level and above because the ability to construct mathematical arguments develops the logical precision that the most demanding examination questions reward. I use spaced retrieval practice as a core technique — regularly returning to previously covered material through new problem types — because research consistently shows this produces more durable learning than linear progression through content. My teaching goal is a student who approaches every mathematical question with a clear method and the confidence to follow it through.
