About Ed
I am coming to the end of my gap year, with an unconditional offer to study History and Politics at Clare College Cambridge. I achieved 3A*s (English Literature, History, Economics) and an A (German) at A-level, as well as an A in an extended project qualification. I also have a background in debate and public speaking, having competed to a high level in inter-school debate competition.
During my gap year, I have worked remotely for the Liberal Democrats as a caseworker, volunteered in a German speaking foster home, and backpacked across Mexico. As well as working half the year in a pub to save up for the fun stuff!
I have experience tutoring for younger students at school, as well as helping to homeschool children during my time in Germany.
I love literature, and believe the study of books and their context is both rewarding in and of itself, and an under-valued way to access a wide range of subjects, including philosophy and history.
I want to help students develop the argument skills that were a game-changer for me during my A-Levels, and are invaluable when applying to top universities.

My main priority as a tutor, would be to develop skills of critical analysis and argument, which could be generally applied to any range of essay based subjects.
Writing an essay is a skill which must be taught and practiced, but with the time pressure on schools, especially in content heavy subjects such as history and philosophy, these foundational skills are often sidelined. Improving essay technique is one of the easiest ways to significantly improve marks.
I am confident that in a few sessions, I could help a student approach an essay based exam with more confidence - with the skills to dissect the question, develop an argument, and structure thematic paragraphs tied together by a conclusion.
I would also be very happy to help students with content which they are struggling to understand on their own. I do believe however, that for the most part, a focus on skills that allow students to make the most of their knowledge would make the biggest difference in terms of grades, and can be very difficult to develop without help.

I have worked with Ed as a tennis coach. He gets on with all the students well, and can communicate the technique very effectively.
Ed has worked with students before as a sports coach and tutor for younger students, and always received positive feedback, and he has a genuine passion for History and Politics. The combination of his strength in his subject area, and his ability to work well with students, makes him an ideal tutor.

Happy to have a meeting free of charge, to discuss what the student wants to get out of the lessons. This would help me plan to be effective from the beginning, and be sure the student is getting what they want out of subsequent sessions.
