About Turner

Hello, I am Turner.

I was born and raised in Vietnam and now live in Toronto with my family. I studied petroleum engineering at Bach Khoa University in Ho Chi Minh City and later completed an MBA at Columbia Southern University.

My career started offshore. I worked as an engineer with Petronas Carigali, PV Drilling and Schlumberger before I moved into sales. In 2008 I founded Petrotech, a company that supplied engineers, drilling supervisors and project managers to oil and gas projects. We grew it over 12 years and received tax-compliance awards from Vietnam’s General Department of Taxation and Ministry of Finance. I then co-founded PetroSouth, a technical services company with offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Toronto, and I have worked as a country sales manager leading a team of 12.

Sharing knowledge has always been part of my work. I am a guest lecturer at RMIT, HUFI, Bach Khoa and Tan Tao universities, and I run a data science community for energy professionals in Vietnam. Many of the people I have worked with were engineers who suddenly had to sell, write proposals or defend a budget. I enjoy helping them make that change, because I made it myself.

As a tutor I am patient, well prepared and honest. I start every lesson on time, I prepare material around your own goals, and I give clear feedback with specific changes you can make. If something in your work is not ready, I will tell you kindly and show you how to fix it.

I teach in English and Vietnamese. I would be glad to help you build your sales and business analysis skills, whether you are a student, a new salesperson or an experienced professional taking on a new role.

Hello, I am Turner. I spent 25 years in oil and gas, refining and power in Vietnam and Canada, first as a petroleum engineer with Schlumberger and Petronas Carigali, then in sales and business development. I founded Petrotech in 2008 and later co-founded PetroSouth, a Canada-Vietnam technical services company. I have won tenders worth more than USD 1 million and lost some I expected to win. My lessons come from those deals.

My teaching method

I teach sales the way I sell, with a three-step model: Diagnose, Prove, Commit. First you find the client’s biggest problem and repeat it back in their own words. Then you prove your solution with evidence their engineers or finance team will accept. Finally you ask for a specific next step with a date. You will spend most of each lesson doing this yourself. We role-play client meetings, rewrite your real emails and proposals, and go through tender documents line by line.

For business analysis, we work from real documents: annual reports, tender packages, price breakdowns and market data. You learn to read the numbers, find where the client is under pressure, and turn it into a one-page business case a manager can approve. I hold an MBA and use data analysis in my own work, so when it helps we also use Excel or simple Python.

I also use the coaching questions I use with my own sales staff, such as “What is the real challenge for you?” and “If you say yes to this, what are you saying no to?” You can keep using them on your own deals after the lessons end.

A typical 90-minute lesson

10 minutes: what has happened since the last lesson, and the one problem you want to solve today.
20 minutes: one concept, shown through a deal or case from my own work.
40 minutes: you apply it to your situation, for example a client call role-play, a proposal rewrite or a company’s financial figures.
15 minutes: feedback, with the exact wording or numbers I would change.
5 minutes: one task with a deadline before the next lesson.

What sets me apart

I still work in sales and business development, so the examples are current. I have sat across the table from senior managers at state energy companies and international contractors, and I have managed a sales team of 12 people. I am a guest lecturer at RMIT, HUFI, Bach Khoa and Tan Tao universities in Vietnam. I also share the deals I lost and what went wrong. Students tell me those stories teach them the most.

Who the lessons are for

University and college students in business, commerce or engineering who need help with case analysis, case competitions or preparing for a first sales job.
Early-career salespeople and account managers in B2B, especially in technical industries such as energy, engineering, industrial equipment and IT.
Engineers and technical specialists moving into business development or sales roles.
Newcomers to Canada with experience abroad who want to sell, present and interview with confidence in a Canadian business setting.
Small business owners who want to price, pitch and assess new opportunities.

All levels are welcome, from beginners to experienced managers. Lessons are in English or Vietnamese, online or in person in the Toronto area. Before the first lesson I ask what you want to achieve, and I plan the sessions around your goal.
