About Jocelyn

Hi! I'm Jocelyn, a native Mandarin speaker from China, currently based in the UK.

I hold a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics from University College London (UCL), following my undergraduate studies in China Studies with a minor in Teaching Chinese as an International Language, where I developed a strong interest in language, culture, and intercultural communication. I am also an ICA-certified Chinese language teacher (Senior Level), with experience working as a teaching assistant in a school and providing private tutoring.

Having studied and lived in both China and the UK, I've experienced first-hand how learning and using languages can open doors to new cultures, perspectives, and connections. This is something I genuinely enjoy sharing with my students.

My academic background has also shaped the way I think about language. To me, language is much more than a set of grammar rules or vocabulary lists. It's a way of expressing who we are, connecting with others, and understanding the world around us.

As a tutor, I'm patient, approachable, and genuinely interested in getting to know my students. I believe everyone has their own learning journey, and I love helping people discover the joy and confidence that comes with communicating in a new language.

About the lesson

I believe learning Mandarin should be engaging, practical, and enjoyable. My lessons go beyond memorising vocabulary and grammar — I aim to help you build confidence in using Chinese naturally while discovering the language and culture behind it.

My teaching approach:

- Personalised learning: Every student learns differently! I tailor my lessons to your level, interests, learning goals, and pace.

- Communication-focused: I use interactive activities, everyday conversations, and real-life scenarios to help you develop practical communication skills.

- Language meets culture: Learning a language also means understanding its cultural context. I incorporate Chinese culture, contemporary expressions, and authentic materials to make lessons more meaningful.

- A supportive learning environment: Making mistakes is part of learning! I encourage curiosity, questions, and active participation in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

What to expect from my lessons:

Lessons typically last 60 minutes and can cover speaking, listening, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing, depending on your needs. Whether you want to start learning Mandarin from scratch, improve your conversational fluency, or deepen your understanding of Chinese language and culture, we can work towards your goals together.

My qualifications and experience:

I hold a Senior-Level Certificate in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (ICA) and have an academic background in Teaching Chinese as an International Language, alongside a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics from University College London (UCL).

I have also worked as a teaching assistant in a school and provided private tutoring, giving me practical experience in supporting students with different learning needs.

My lessons are open to learners of different levels, from complete beginners to those looking to develop greater confidence and fluency in Mandarin. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to learn!
