About Emily
I'm Emily Woo, a PhD student in the Political Science Department at UCLA, where I also serve as a Graduate Teaching Assistant — working directly with students each week to strengthen their understanding of course material and drive above-average academic outcomes. My academic journey spans three of California's most respected university systems: I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from UC Santa Barbara, followed by a Master of Arts in Political Science from San Francisco State University, where I graduated with a 3.98 GPA.
My teaching experience is both broad and hands-on. At SFSU, I served as an Instructor of Record — independently designing curriculum, syllabi, and exams for introductory courses — as well as a Teaching Assistant and Academic Disability Proctor, giving me a deep appreciation for the diverse needs learners bring to the classroom. Most recently, I worked as a College Preparation Tutor with Prep Academy Tutors in San Diego, where I met 1-on-1 with students to build personalized sessions tailored to each individual's goals.
With years of real classroom experience at the university level, a strong record of academic achievement, and a genuine passion for helping students succeed, I bring both the knowledge and the dedication to make a meaningful difference in your academic journey.

I approach every tutoring session with one goal in mind: making complex material click for you. As a UCLA PhD student, I blend academic rigor with a student-first approach: I diagnose each learner's specific gaps and build a custom roadmap, rather than relying on a generic curriculum. My teaching method blends direct instruction with Socratic questioning, meaning I don't just hand you answers — I guide you to find them yourself, building the kind of deep understanding that holds up under pressure on test day. A typical lesson opens with a brief diagnostic review of previous material, moves into targeted skill-building around your weakest areas, and closes with timed, exam-style practice so you're always building real test stamina alongside content knowledge. What sets me apart is that I treat the whole student: scores matter, but so does mindset, time management, and exam anxiety, and I coach all of it. My lessons are designed for high school students preparing for the SAT or ACT, college students and graduates targeting the GRE, and anyone in the college or graduate school application process who needs support with essays, school selection, or strategy. Whether you're starting from scratch or fine-tuning for a top score, I meet you exactly where you are.
Recommendations

Emily is a trusted colleague at UCLA and I highly recommend her as a Super Tutor. I’ve seen Emily engage with her
students one-on-one and she is very patient, knowledgeable, and caring. She meets students where they’re at and I notice many of them feel very comfortable going to her for help, which shows how welcoming and inclusive she is. Her ability to balance her own schoolwork and research with teaching is impressive, demonstrating her reliability to everyone she works with. Most importantly, Emily approaches teaching with a genuine passion for working with students and guiding them to be their best selves.View more recommendations
