About Jamie
Whilst my academic profile reflects a successful student, having achieved ten 9s, three A*s and an A, I am not afraid to confess that learning was something I found very challenging when I was at school. However, I was fortunate enough to experience the impact of a supportive community of friends and teachers and an excellent learning environment which enabled me to find my passion for mathematics.
My experience has made me realise that for students like myself, the key to academic success lies first in the discovery of enjoyment, not an ability to pick up new concepts with ease. This realisation is one that I am determined to share with others because like any advocate of mathematics, I find it tragic that this subject is not enjoyed by everyone!

I think in many ways, it is helpful to think of maths as a language.
In my experience, as developing GCSE, A Level or (in my case) degree level mathematicians we can find a rewarding satisfaction in the growth of our mathematical vocabulary, which builds as we think about problems, explore new topics and engage in relevant discussion. As our mathematical dictionary expands and the interpretations behind the words and phrases of this elegant language start to become apparent, a sense of expressive freedom and conceptual fluency will fuel a powerful curiosity for any student.
At the beginning of a lesson, I will introduce a new idea or method (serving as new vocabulary in our analogy). After doing so in a clear and engaging way, we will work through a few relevant problems together, using the new ‘vocabulary’ in conversation and further deepening a tutee's understanding by doing so. By the end of a lesson, I will ensure that students feel ready to start attempting questions independently!
I will strive to leave tutees feeling confident yet inquisitive, a combination that I believe to be invaluable for any student looking for success during their time at school and beyond. After all, mathematics is about practice, and practice is driven by curiosity.
