Find out more about Nick

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I first developed a passion for Economics when I was on holiday and read 'Capital in the Twenty-First Century' by Thomas Piketty. This sparked my desire to undertake an undergraduate degree in Economics and from then, I loved sharing and receiving knowledge. This shortly led me to tutoring where I felt I could not only enhance my understandings but also learn new things as students have a wide range of topic areas they want to discuss.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I mainly teach Economics however I also teach other commerce-style subjects such as Management, Marketing, Accounting and Finance.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have a couple but one stands out in particular! Thomas Piketty, a well-known French economist who writes about income inequalities. These real-world thinking and applications are extremely interesting and can be related to our every day lives.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think there are many qualities to be a good person more so! I like to be patient, understanding, friendly, and most of all, helpful! I realise students have different ways of learning and different goals, so its my job to cater to them individually!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I used to teach economics to large groups with the youngest in the class being 12 and the oldest being 65!! It's important to make the content as easily digestible for all ages!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

Economics obviously has its challenges! Many students think its boring or hard (which is why they're looking for a tutor, right?) I agree, it can be! But like most things, its all about your drive to do well and put in the time and effort. Stick with something is a great behavioural trait to have!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I definitely enjoy tutoring. But my motivation lies in seeing the satisfaction when my students get great grades and start understanding the concepts and theory. A lot of the time they're really switched on and just need a few helpful insights to get them a large increase in grades.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I think what makes my tutoring style different is honesty! I get so many requests for lessons but I only take on those who I feel I can truly help. I see no point in charging someone their time and money if I can't help them to a high level. I feel this ensures my quality and reputation as a great tutor!
