About James
A bit about me! I graduated from a Masters’ programme in Latin American Studies from the University of Cambridge, after having completed my BA in Spanish and Italian.
There’ve been many moments in my life where I’ve felt something missing in the way we learn in schools and at university; there’s often a lot of emphasis on acquiring knowledge, but not necessarily as much on developing understanding, and learning how to approach problems independently and confidently.
I strongly believe that working with students is never a one-way process; in helping people explore new ideas and develop their skills, I am also learning new ways to approach the things I teach, and therefore how to challenge and push both students and myself to the best of our shared capacities.

Conversation is always the cornerstone of my lessons! I think it’s crucial to work with each individual student’s needs, and what they hope to gain from a tutoring experience, in order to best shape the way we approach the subject together. To do that I try at all times to situate goals, areas for further study, and targets in their wider context, hoping to explain deeper processes to try and stimulate a broader understanding of the subject in general. In doing this I hope to give students the capacity to express themselves and tackle problems independently, boosting both their ability and their confidence, and inspiring a love of language and all its possibilities!
