About Kerwyn
Hi, I’m your tutor! I hold an Honours degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Cape Town (UCT). While my academic background involves high-level risk analysis and advanced problem-solving, my true passion lies in basic mathematics—spanning from high school foundational maths up to first-year university level.
I know firsthand that mathematics can feel intimidating. However, I have a secret to share: the things we end up enjoying the most are often the exact things we initially struggled to understand. I want to help you experience that incredible "lightbulb moment" where a difficult concept suddenly clicks, and a subject you dreaded becomes one you genuinely look forward to mastering.
I bring 4 years of dedicated tutoring experience to our sessions. During my studies at UCT, I was employed by the university's official Statistics and Actuarial Science departments. In these roles, I successfully guided students through:
• First-year University Statistics
• Various subjects involving Actuarial Mathematics
My Teaching Philosophy
• Empathy First: I understand what it feels like to look at a maths problem and feel completely stuck. My sessions are entirely judgment-free zones.
• Tailored Pace: We will break down complex, scary formulas into bite-sized, manageable, and logical concepts at a speed that works best for you.

My methodology involves gauging your current strengths and weaknesses and working on a schedule of questions to help you improve gradually, honing your strengths and balancing out weak points.
I am proficient in English as it is my native language. The idea is to a) use me as a resource to help explain tricky questions to you, one on one, at your pace, with you asking as many questions as you would like. In addition, b) give you a summary/in depth review of any concepts you feel you would benefit from revisiting or that I feel would help you grow. And then c), assign you questions to help you gain comfort with different topics and problems. I will be giving you sample questions throughout our time together to attempt, and I will structure it to ensure you are growing at a pace that is comfortable for you.
A lesson will be any combination of the 3 things above, in whichever combination you prefer, with some advice and guidance on what I think would help you grow. Throughout this, I will also give you tips, tricks and "shortcuts" that helped me in my studies.
My lessons are aimed at all students. I am willing to assist anyone that is actively seeking to improve their maths skills and knowledge. The more you have to learn, the longer it may take and the more consistent you will need to be, so please consider this when setting your expectations. This will be something we discuss in the first meeting, so we can put together a plan to assist you.
