About Zahraa
I am a Berkeley, MIT, and Harvard–trained structural engineer, architect, and policy scholar‑practitioner with over 15 years of experience designing and teaching university and professional courses in disaster risk, climate resilience, and the built environment. My teaching work spans graduate programs, continuing education, and international curriculum development, so I am comfortable supporting students at many stages in their academic and professional journey. My professional work is in disaster risk reduction working primarily with the World Bank. I care deeply about clear thinking, careful writing, and helping learners grow into confident, independent scholars.

My teaching method and techniques:
I love helping students discover how to structure a great argument, use evidence appropriately, and think critically about their subject to help them obtain skills that go beyond any single assignment. Every session is tailored to you: your discipline (engineering, architecture, planning, social sciences, policy, and more) and we build on what you already know. The goal is to develop a true appreciation for learning to help you reach your educational goals and position you for career success.
A typical lesson:
In a 60‑minute lesson we
- Review and set goals: brief check‑in and connect to your immediate needs as related to broader objectives.
- Introduce one key skill: for example, framing a thesis, outlining, tightening an argument, or research methods.
- Apply it to your own work: we revise or plan directly on your draft or assignment.
- Summarize and assign a small next step: so progress continues between sessions.
What sets me apart:
I am a structural engineer, architect, and policy scholar‑practitioner, with extensive experience designing and teaching university and professional courses in disaster risk, climate resilience, and the built environment. I aim to bring the same academic rigor to coaching students at every level, guiding them toward practical, lasting skills, and more confident thinking.
