About Jess
As a native English speaker, I understand it can be daunting to learn a new language. Having learnt both Spanish and French, I am equipped with the knowledge of how best to learn a new language. Duolingo will never be able to teach you to be fluent; it is purely to teach you a few useful phrases, and even then I would not say it provides you with an adequate understanding of this new vocabulary. Studying linguistics at the University of Oxford has taught me that grammar is the backbone of language-learning. I see it as the skeleton of a language, with vocabulary filling in the gaps. Hence why my teaching focus will be on grammar AND vocabulary. Most tutors skip between different topics, teaching phrases without really going into depth on the individual words - which I acknowledge is important with younger children - but I find this to be more of an introductory technique. If this is what you desire, I am happy to teach in this way by simply providing vocabulary that will get you by on holiday. On the other hand, if you dream of being fluent, I am definitely the tutor for you. Another key aspect of my teaching is my admiration for language immersion and so I will often relate our lessons to Spanish culture and current Spanish news. As you can see, I am very flexible with my teaching style, and heavily passionate about Spanish (passion is most of the battle to being fluent after all.) I hope I can be of service to you!!

Typically a lesson will begin with a vocabulary test based on the previous week’s lesson. Next, we will move onto learning a new topic, such as a new tense. Finally, we will end with a translation/wordsearch/comprehension (etc.) task to consolidate what has been taught that lesson. You will also be given 10 words to learn for next week’s vocabulary test. The lessons are for all ages and levels, and the activities will be adjusted depending on your experience.
