About Jacob
As a public school teacher in the Bronx, and as per my collegiate level teaching experience I am comfortable working with students of all ages and backgrounds and I always leave room in the instructional plan for the students input and to progress toward the students ultimate goals and creative interests relating to music. I have had students at all levels from beginning adult hobbyists, elementary school students in the classroom, college and university Majors, and high school students preparing for auditions or careers as performers. Some of my students have gone on to such things as; having original songs recorded professionally and released at Lincoln Center, winning multiple rounds of the young adult portion of the “Amateur Night at the Apollo“, and have been chosen to perform on Broadway as a lead in a performance of In the Heights as part of the prestigious Schubert Festival. No matter your goals or skill level, I am flexible and able to meet you where you are so that we can accomplish your goals together!

Jacob Mortensen is an educator, flutist and multi-instrumentalist based in Brooklyn N.Y. Specializing in contemporary and Historical performance. Professor Mortensen has been featured as a soloist with the New York University Symphony Orchestra, the College of Saint Rose Symphony Orchestra, the New York City Electro-Acoustic Music Festival, and in various solo and chamber recitals in the NYC area. A passion for music history and world music has led him to study many periods and styles of music, most notably period performance on baroque and historical instruments. He is also an avid believer in the modernization of classical music through performance of new and underperformed works from composers outside of the popular canon. His hope is that each student will learn not only the technical aspects of flute playing but also develop an understanding of the history of their instrument as well as a broad knowledge of the music written for it and those flutists who have shaped the way we approach the instrument from a mechanical and virtuosic standpoint. Professor Mortensen has served as adjunct faculty at NYU-Steinhardt and adjunct professor of Flute at Molloy College and is currently working as a music teacher with the NYC department of education. His primary teachers include such world-renowned flutists as Keith Underwood, Robert Dick, Soo-Kyung Park, and Yvonne Chavez-Hansbrough. In addition to instruction on the flute and traverso, Mr. Mortensen is able to provide beginner to intermediate level instruction on all other woodwinds or voice, and is also available for one on one or group lessons relating to topics in music history, theory, and general musicianship or to serve as an ensemble coach for chamber groups such as flute choir or woodwind quintet.
