About Miria

I am a high school graduate who has studied Japanese for 9 years in Cairns, and will soon attend University in Brisbane. I intend to continue language studies alongside a Bachelor of Engineering and Science at QUT, with the hope of studying abroad in Japan.

During Senior high school, I have gained experience tutoring Japanese grammar, Kanji, writing and speaking to younger students and peers. I have also held a waitressing job in a local ramen restaurant, where Japanese was the main language spoken and I could improve my speaking ability.
Throughout my high school years, I always volunteered to be a "Buddy" for Japanese high school students visiting our school, which involved providing tours of our classrooms and accompanying them to classes and lunchtimes.

I am a recipient of the 2024 Iwasaki Sangyo Prize, which allowed me participate in a fully immersive trip to Japan in order to improve my language abilities. These experiences ranged from studying and graduating from Genki Japanese and Culture School, to completing an internship at Tokyo Global Gateway, a large-scale English language facility, as well as attending seminars at Chuo University, The University of Tokyo, and Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd.

From a very young age I have grown an interest in Japanese writing, culture and food, which led me to study it further in school. My hobbies involve tea, Shodou (Japanese calligraphy), and making mochi.

From these experiences, I hope to share my enthusiasm about Japanese culture to students and help them grow their language skills!

I believe that learning a language requires consistency with practice, attention to detail and a level of patience. With these factors, confidence in learning another language is built over time.
For these reasons, lessons are tailored to each student's personal needs in the subject, including regular use through a small amount of homework each week to recap topics covered in the lesson and address each students' areas for improvement. This will also provide an opportunity for regular practice.

I use techniques such as "I Do, We Do, You Do" (e.g., I complete an example question, next do one with the student, and then give the student a question to complete on their own). All queries are welcome - no question is a "dumb" question :).

Students are encouraged to bring a copy of their coursework planner to lessons as it will help identify exactly what needs attention in lessons. (I use QCAA course-planners as a rough guideline).

I am able to provide tutoring in topics such as grammar, speaking, writing, reading and comprehension up to QCE Year 12 standard.
