About Katharine
I have a host of experience in teaching roles (mainly in teaching English to non-native speakers but also in professional and creative writing skills). I also have a broad knowledge of all humanities subjects such as Geography, History, Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology and Ethics.
ESL Teaching Experience:
I have taught English as a foreign language in India and China and I have designed and led English writing workshops during a work placement with a social enterprise based in Tanzania.
I have volunteered as an ESL teacher for migrants in Brighton, UK for the charity The Migrant English project, not only teaching English but helping with adjustment and providing emotional support.
I currently teach students of Taiwanese and Chinese origin ESL, teaching a range of students from absolute beginners to advanced adult learners. I also design and plan specific teaching packs for private tutoring sessions based on students needs.
English Literature/Language Tutoring:
I have helped students gain high results at GCSE and A level , teaching specialist workshops in a high school with vulnerable young adults with varying specific learning needs. I am knowledgeable and well-equipped to teach English to students who need extra support, as well as knowing the curriculum thoroughly. My warmth, patience and passion working with young people makes me an excellent tutor, dedicated to making students feel comfortable and confident in themselves.

Hey there! My name is Kat and I have been an English tutor for over 7 years! I absolutely love teaching and meeting new students. Let me tell you a bit about me:
I am TEFL certified, having provided private tuition for a variety of ages and levels, working with advanced adults, young people, and those with special educational needs. I have also facilitated English language workshops for students all over the world, including designing professional writing classes in Tanzania and running English conversation workshops in India!
As well as being an adept ESL teacher, I have excellent knowledge of English Language and Literature, and the will to encourage and motivate young learners, building their confidence! I have helped many young people with specific learning needs see that they are capable learners and find their passion for English.
I have experience teaching students of varying abilities and ages for in-school English learning: improving literacy and writing skills with primary-aged pupils, preparing GCSE and A-level students (English Literature, English Language, Humanities) for their examinations.
I have the initiative and skill to approach teaching based on individuals needs, depending on ability and experience and learning styles. I like to approach a topic first by introducing with an interactive method which inspires different ways of thinking about difficult concepts, and then work on techniques to give a full detailed understanding.
My goals in teaching are firstly, to improve my students' knowledge and understanding of, and confidence in, the relevant subject, and second, to teach skills that are transferable across an array of analysis and writing-based subjects. I also encourage reviewing what has been learned in one session at the end to reinforce students with a sense of achievement and help build on confidence which can be half the battle!
I am a warm and relatable individual who is patient and creative in my teaching style. I understand that everyone has a unique learning style and can think outside the box when teaching tricky subjects. If you are looking for someone to design a specific lesson plan tailored to your needs look no further! Looking for some casual conversation practice? Send me a message :) I can't wait to meet you!
