About Ilya
Jazz bassist and composer Ilya Osachuk is one of the top new musical voices of his generation. He seeks to push the boundaries of jazz while simultaneously upholding its tradition and vernacular. Ilya graduated from The Juilliard School with a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies in 2023. Before attending Juilliard, Osachuk graduated from the University of Manitoba’s Desautels Faculty of Music in 2021 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Performance. A two-time recipient of the Morse Teaching Fellowship at Juilliard, Ilya is an experienced and enthusiastic educator. He has been teaching since 2016, having taught a wide range of ages and skill levels from beginners to college-level musicians. He teaches jazz, classical, folk, pop, and contemporary music. As a clinician, Osachuk has taught at middle and high schools in New York, NY and Manitoba Canada, and has worked as a guest lecturer at the University of Manitoba. Since moving to New York City, Ilya has become a staple of its music scene. He has performed with GRAMMY, TONY, and JUNO Award-winning musicians at some of the top jazz venues in North America, including Dizzy’s Club, Birdland, Smalls Jazz Club, Blues Alley, Yoshi's, The Jazz Bistro, and The Kennedy Center. He has been recognized by his mentors and peers alike, being selected for the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program in 2022, and the Ravinia Steans Music Institute Program for Jazz in 2024.

My approach to teaching is highly personalized, depending on your level of experience and what you need most at the moment!
From beginning students to those preparing for college auditions, I craft a unique curriculum for each student I teach. My job as a teacher is to recognize the strengths and learning style of each of my students, and help them fill in the gaps to help them become complete bassists and musicians.
My lessons include technique, music theory, ear training, and repertoire, but I prioritize the APPLICATION of these skills. I believe it is crucial for my students to be working towards their goals with what I teach, and to understand WHY they are learning just as much as understanding what they are learning. I don’t believe in doing exercises “for the sake of doing them.”
With experience both as a professional musician (jazz, classical, folk, pop) and professional educator, I believe I am uniquely qualified to teach the double bass and electric bass at a high level – meaning you will improve more quickly and learn more deeply through studying with me. I am so excited to help you become the bassist and musician you want to be!
