About Ryan
I’m Ryan Barnes. I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Arts in History. I am a National Merit Scholar and scored a 1560 on the SAT. My passion resides in writing and sharing the understanding I have of the English language.
I have experience working in the writing center at USC, helping students better articulate their arguments in academic papers. This experience has given me insight into common mistakes people make while writing, many of which are the basis of what is tested in the English sections of the SAT.
In my experience tutoring, I made it my responsibility to create a supportive and trusting environment that lends itself to greater focus. My goal is to make learning fun and personal by meeting students' current needs. I do so by utilizing "yes, and" (an improv technique) that builds on students' current understanding and takes the pressure off making mistakes.

I teach the SAT as a learnable system, giving students strategies they can rely on under pressure. By breaking down complex reading and grammar concepts into clear, intuitive steps, I make the test feel manageable instead of overwhelming. I prioritize confidence-building, guiding students to trust their thought process and avoid second guessing. Using a unique approach by borrowing from improvisation (like "yes, and ") I aim to create a supportive, low-pressure learning environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and asking questions. A usual lesson plan would include warming up by having the student explain topics they are struggling with or a brief summary of previously covered topics, focusing on learning a reading/grammar strategy and having the student explain it back to me, then guided practice to work through reasoning with the student in real-time. The last part would be independent practice followed by review and reflection to reinforce concepts and build confidence.
