About Babak
I’m a working filmmaker—a writer–director and producer—who brings active industry experience to every lesson, with nearly 25 years of teaching cinema, screenwriting, and directing in film schools and intensive workshops. I’ve mentored hundreds of students, from first-time filmmakers to professionals refining their craft. I also served as Creative Director of the Media Studio at Fabrica in Italy, mentoring and leading international artists from concept through delivery. As a filmmaker, my work has earned major festival recognition (including the Silver Lion for Best Director at Venice). I translate that real-world rigor into clear goals, candid notes, and practical steps you can execute immediately. My style is friendly but exacting and stern, results oriented—respecting your voice while pushing for clarity, stronger choices, and professional standards. My teaching style is to find your fingerprint in your work as an artist, not what I think you should be doing. What to expect from me Professionalism: punctual sessions, confidentiality (NDA available), and a written recap after each class. Craft + career: story and directing fundamentals, plus pitch decks, grant readiness, and festival strategy. Real outcomes: every session ends with a concrete plan and reusable templates. I teach beginners through advanced students and can work in English, Farsi, or German. If you want a mentor who combines artistic precision with practical industry know-how—and is actively making films—I’d be glad to help you move your project forward with confidence.

Teaching methodology & techniques Practical, industry-focused. I teach what I use: story structure, scene blocking, lensing, editing rhythm, presentations, festival strategy, and documentary production & ethics. Learn-by-doing. We work on your actual pages, deck, or footage with live edits (“scene surgery”), beat-mapping, reverse outlining, and clear checklists. Tools. Google Docs, (concealed information) links, Keynote/PowerPoint Final Draft. Confidentiality. Your work stays private; NDA available on request. A typical 60–90 minute lesson Goal check (5 min): What must be solved today? Warm read (10): You pitch it; I probe for stakes/conflict. Deep work (35–60): Screenwriting: diagnose premise, stakes, scene objectives; live rewrite of a page/outline. Directing: blocking plan + lens choices; shot list that serves emotion, not coverage bloat. Pitch/Deck: logline surgery; tone frames; comps; “proof of execution” slide. Doc ethics/festival: risk map, consent language, positioning + submission plan. Next steps (10): Concrete tasks, deadlines, and a template to use. What sets me apart Proven track record: Silver Lion (Venice) for Secret Ballot; 752 Is Not a Number premiered at TIFF. Both art & business: creative direction + financing. Clear, candid notes: no fluff; decisions tied to outcomes. Multilingual & global: EN / FA / DE; Toronto-based, international experience. Who the lessons are for Levels: beginner to professional. Profiles: film students; emerging/mid-career filmmakers; journalists moving into documentary; creators prepping grants, pitch decks, or festival submissions. Formats: 1:1 tutoring (online or Toronto in-person); 4–8 session sprints for scripts, decks, or festival packages. Result: you leave each session with sharper pages, a workable plan, and momentum.

I first came across Babak Payami’s work from 25 years ago when his film Secret Ballot received international recognition. That film left a lasting impression on me not only because of its artistry but because of the way Babak approached cinema as a space for dialogue, reflection, justice, humanity and truth.
Years later, I had the chance to learn directly from him in workshops and talks. He is full of profound ideas and what struck me most was his generosity, openness and deep knowledge of film. He brings the same creativity and sensitivity to teaching that he does to filmmaking which is listening carefully, encouraging curiosity and sharing insights that stay with you long after the class ends.
If you are considering working with him, I can wholeheartedly recommend the experience. Babak has a rare ability to inspire and to make cinema and learning itself feel alive.Babak is an extraordinary story-teller and a passionate teacher.
