About Mel
I have a degree in English from the University of Southampton, and a PGCE in Secondary English from the University of Reading.
I began classroom teaching in 2004 in Hampshire, and have taught in a variety of schools across Hampshire and Surrey ever since.
Tutoring online allows me the flexibility to plan my own curriculum and be the ultimate responsive teacher. I enjoy building relationships over time, and seeing students' confidence develop as they get the input they need.

Join me for sessions that are crafted around the latest educational thinking but also tailored for the student's needs.
I employ recall activities, critical thinking, extended writing and heaps and heaps of exploratory discussion. My aim is always to help students learn to love texts and language, as well as passing those exams. I work with students at all ages and stages of secondary education, as well as supporting adults returning to education.
Sessions with me are 50 minutes long and will be broken down into phases: activating prior knowledge; introducing new texts, concepts and vocabulary; and finally exploring and responding. Students are encouraged to self-evaluate and get familiar with their own strengths and weaknesses. As students get closer to GCSE we get into the nitty gritty of mark schemes, assessment criteria and exam technique, but I try never to lose sight of the bigger picture of building a word-rich life.
