About Riley
Every piano lesson I teach is designed to inspire curiosity, build confidence, and cultivate musicianship that lasts a lifetime. My method blends thorough technical training with creative expression, ensuring students not only master notes and rhythms but also connect deeply with the music they play. From the earliest stages, I focus on fundamentals like hand coordination, rhythm accuracy, posture, and note reading, using tools such as flashcards, rhythmic clapping, and interactive technology to engage learners. As students progress, I introduce concepts of phrasing, dynamics, articulation, and style interpretation, tailored to the genres they love—from classical masterpieces to modern pop and jazz standards. I encourage improvisation and composition early on, helping students realize that music is a living, evolving art form. I incorporate listening assignments, collaborative performance opportunities, and digital tools for recording and playback to create a well-rounded learning experience. One notable success was guiding a high school student through audition preparation that led to acceptance into a prestigious music program, a testament to the power of targeted, personalized instruction. I strive to foster an inclusive, patient, and nurturing atmosphere where mistakes are embraced as part of the learning process, and every small victory is celebrated. Piano should be a source of joy, challenge, and self-discovery—and I’m dedicated to helping each student experience all three.

Teaching piano is an art that requires patience, creativity, and adaptability, qualities I have developed throughout my years working with students of all ages and skill levels. My goal is to create a learning environment where students feel safe to explore, make mistakes, and discover the joy of music at their own pace.
I emphasize the importance of foundational skills like hand positioning, finger independence, and rhythmic accuracy, which I approach through carefully crafted exercises and repertoire that suits each learner’s interests and aspirations. Whether a student is fascinated by classical sonatas, jazz improvisation, pop hits, or film scores, I integrate those genres into lessons to maintain motivation and foster a love of diverse musical styles. Music theory, sight-reading, and ear training are presented in practical, approachable ways to help students develop musicianship alongside technical proficiency.
I also encourage creative expression through improvisation and composition, allowing students to develop their unique musical voices and deepen their connection to the instrument. I place strong emphasis on cultivating effective practice habits and goal-setting strategies tailored to individual schedules and learning styles, which keeps progress steady and meaningful. Technology, including recording tools and interactive apps, plays an integral role in my teaching, offering students the chance to hear themselves objectively and track their development over time.
A particularly rewarding experience was working with a student who initially struggled with timing and confidence; through targeted exercises and consistent support, they blossomed into a performer who could confidently share their music in community recitals. Ultimately, I strive to inspire every student not only to become skilled pianists but to embrace music as a lifelong source of joy, self-expression, and personal growth.
