About Elaine

Living and working all over the world has given me the opportunity to learn about and understand different cultures. I am open to all sorts of views and tastes. My American high school students feel that I made learning a pleasure and not a chore. My International students came to view me as one of them opposed to a foreigner. They felt that they learned a lot from me and also about the variety of people from the US; I seemed to dispel any original negative feelings they might have had. Finally, working at Harvard University polished any ruff edges I may have had. It was an honer to work side by side with academic excellence. That was the cherry on top of my academic and professional life.

Each of my lessons would have a clear and basic goal that would address and reinforce a student's knowledge. Each lesson would be based on a combination of what each student wants to improve and what I think needs improvement. My first course of action would be to get a sample of the student's current level of expertise in the area(s) he or she wishes to improve.

This sample will give me an idea of which level the student is currently on and let me know where I need to have them start in our journey working together in our mission to excel to higher levels. I believe that starting with one particular goal and to continue to explore it until we are satisfied that the goal has been reached and is a part of the student's treasure chest of knowledge.

It is important to stay on tract and not skip steps or not complete them fully. We want to advance with all that has been learned in tact. Once a skill has been learned, it will never be abandoned, but used continually while perfecting other skills. The repetition will not be monotonous. Through communication with the student, I will get to know what is interesting and relevant to them. The said goal will be realized through the use of communication and exercises.

A student might want to understand how to use commas effectively and grammatically correct. I would incorporate their major issue (commas) with understanding other connectives such as colons and semi-colons. They can practice the use of all tree by writing about a series of what interest them and practicing how to mesh their ideas using connectors. They will learn how to avoid writing many simple sentences and advance to construct more complex sentences.

This example might seem basic, but it gives you an idea of the way I would tutor with the goal of using correct punctuation. Also, it is a very important punctuation lesson, one that many people who write commercially on the internet have not yet mastered.

I am used to teaching high-school students, but everything I teach (grammar, critical thinking, expository writing and punctuation) could benefit anyone.

I have taught many types of students of varied ages and degrees of expertise. I have taught High School English in Los Angeles and in Boston. I have taught English as a second language to high school students who have little to no English. I have also taught basic English to adults in Germany who wanted to know enough English to make traveling easier. I have also prof-read academic papers for scholars from Asian countries who were chosen to spend a year at Harvard.

The main takeaway I got from all groups is their learning experience was beneficial beyond measure due to my warmth, friendliness, and expertise.

Because I have traveled extensively (Europe,China, Japan, and India), I am very comfortable with many different cultures.
