About Nadia

I am a writer and graduate student. I have been pursuing my writing since I was a high school student and mentee at Girls Write Now, a nonprofit that pairs professional writers with young writers in high school seeking guidance and a space to hone their craft. It has now been ten years since I've devoted myself to the study of my craft both inside and outside of educational institutions. My writing has been published in or is forthcoming in the Asian American Writers' Workshop's Open City Magazine, No, Dear Mag, Kweli Journal, QC Voices, and Papercuts. I currently write a column on diaspora, intimacy and grief for QC Voices. I have also received grant money to pursue my writing as an Open City fellow for the Asian American Writers' Workshop covering stories in Richmond Hill, Queens and as a Writer-in-Residence at the Louis Armstrong House Museum working in their archives. In addition to working as a marketing-communications specialist, I have also previously worked as a writing instructor and consultant for Studio in a School, providing guidance to high school students writing personal essays for their college applications, as well short students writing short blog posts on art they've viewed at any number of museums in the city.

I am a writer from South Ozone Park, Queens who has always been interested in the transformative power of writing in all of its forms. I have worked with high school students, college students, as well as writers who are not attached to any educational institution. I believe everyone has the ability and right to be a strong writer. I have enjoyed working the most with those who have been told they cannot write, who believe they cannot hone writing as a craft, but who, after practice, discover that they can write and write well. I have been told that I take an intuitive approach to teaching craft and working with people. I believe in open discussions as opposed to only lecturing. I also believe in leading a class or session with the questions we are trying to tackle for an assignment or piece, illustrative examples that will help us think through this and writing prompts that get us comfortable with our voice on the page. I believe a writing voice is crucial to both academic and creative assignments. My writing prompts are designed for writers to approach assignments with a critical and creative eye. I teach craft and literature by breaking apart the components of a piece (for example, plot, tone, diction, etc.) and looking at how they function to communicate messages to the reader.
