About Amelia

Yale School of Drama MFA. Success in TV (Netflix, Hulu, Apple, A24), film (yet to be announced) and as a playwright, with plays in Moscow, Sydney, Melbourne, Prague, London and around the USA including NYC with great reviews in the New York Times, New Yorker and others. I'm Australian and have lived in many countries. Now I'm an American citizen. My undergraduate degree is in Early Modern History and English Literature. These days, my professional work is TV and film. But my heart is still in the theater. I trained first as a Lighting Designer and worked on many extraordinary plays, circus, puppet shows, contemporary dance and comedy before I got my big writing break. All my work, and the way I teach is informed by ALL of these things.

PLAYWRITING I can go in many directions depending on the student. Teens to MFA level. I'm most comfortable teaching playwriting, and will provide PDFs of essays and plays to accompany short writing tasks. We'll look at different styles of plays from (mostly) the last hundred years by diverse writers (and collectives) in different countries. Some very short, some a little longer. I teach form, tone, world, character, story engines and rewriting techniques. Writing for performance is about performance and design ideas too, so I'll share examples and offer ways for students to widen their visual imaginations and language. Dialogue, stage directions, layout, font, grammar on the page must also reflect what the writer's artistic hopes are for the play. We'll look at that too. As for your writing, I believe in short, quick, new writing and many ideas each week, rather than getting stuck in one large play (unless you are stuck in a large play and need help). Still, I'd encourage students to be braver, bolder, less precious and write small pieces in a range of styles. It's the best way to learn and reflect and enjoy yourself. SCREENWRITING I didn't train as a screenwriter so I'm not so sure about teaching it, but I'm very experienced at offering notes / coverage on something you have already written. I can also suggest readings (no, not how to write and sell TV books, it'll be art theory, cinematography books, plays and scripts).

My hourly rate includes the time it takes me to read and note student's work between sessions, as well as compile readings and PDFs. All included! But if you have a finished long play or film or pilot you'd like to work on, great! Welcome. But it will involve some extra hours for me to read and notate.
