About Derek
I am a 42-year-old music teacher from Rockaway, NJ. I teach high school music in Bergen County, NJ just across the Hudson River from Manhattan. I have taught at the same high school for 17 years and have been privileged to teach and design curriculum for all the music classes, including Vocal Music, Advanced Vocal Ensemble, Band, Advanced Band, Marching Band (extracurricular activity), Guitar Class, Music Technology and Introduction to Music.
In my second job, I am the Music Director/Organist/Cantor/Choir Director at Sacred Heart Church in Rockaway, one of the parishes in the town where I live with my wife, Jennifer and seven children.
I hold a BA from Seton Hall University in Communications and Music Performance, as well as an MA from New York University in Music Composition.
On the side, I am also active in composition and have one release of Christian music on Youtube Music/Spotify/Amazon and other platforms titled 'A Divine Mercy Encounter' under the name 'Derek Thomas Nelson'.

I see each student as a unique individual who brings specific gifts, talents and experiences to the lesson. Also, I try to tailor the lessons to the needs/goals of the particular student. Lastly, I believe that a light, but focused atmosphere is the way to go. Each lesson, I try to have the student leaving uplifted, motivated and excited to continue the journey.
