My name is Mirdjine, and I have been tutoring for 7.5 years. It has truly been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. My areas of expertise include math (Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry), science (Biology, Chemistry, and Physical/Earth Science), social studies (Social Studies, History, and Art History), and Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Grammar, and Spelling). How my lessons go/The foundation of my approach:
When meeting a new student, my approach is to identify their weak points in the lesson, topic, or subject, as well as their learning style. The goal of tutoring is to improve in a particular area, and in almost all subjects, all topics are related. Knowing what a student already understands helps me create a curriculum that avoids repeating strong points, freeing up more time to tackle weak areas. Additionally, knowing their strong points is helpful when addressing weak ones. By integrating concepts they already know and recognizing familiar steps or methods, students can better grasp the material.
Throughout my tutoring experience, I have noticed that different students comprehend better when using a learning style they can interact with. This is why I created a chart to determine, upon the first session, which of the eight learning styles works best for each student.
Ages 5 - 12:
Most students in this age group are being introduced to subjects for the first time, so my teaching approach is often slow-paced. They typically do not have existing knowledge to build on. For this age group, take-home study is usually limited because they need proper guidance and someone to carefully assess every step with them when solving problems, referencing scientific theories, or understanding historical points.
Ages 13 - 17:
Students in this age group have generally been introduced to a broad range of subjects and have a foundational knowledge to build upon. For them, I analyze what they already know about the subject. If they are struggling with a particular lesson, topic, or subject, I go back to the basics to reinforce the foundational concepts they were first taught.
College Students (Undergrad - Graduate):
Most college students are independent learners. They often seek tutoring to delve deeply into specific topics and to enhance their understanding based on their professors' teachings. For college students, I review their notes to understand their progress in a particular topic or subject and ask them to clarify any misunderstandings they had in class. From there, we either rebuild the lesson from scratch or build on their existing knowledge.
What is Take-Home Study (optional):
Take-home study is light work assigned to assess a student's understanding of a lesson, topic, or subject without my guidance. It is optional, and students or their parents can choose to opt-in or opt-out at any time. Depending on our tutoring schedule and the student's school syllabus, I will only assign a maximum of two take-home studies per session, with no more than three questions each. If a student or their parents decide to opt-in for take-home study, we will review the work at the beginning of each tutoring session.
