About COLEMAN
When learning viola, I studied under Eric and Katherine Lewis--Eric being the former first violinist of the Manhattan String Quartet, and Katherine being a pupil of the late great violist Lillian Fuchs. In high school, I managed up to fourteen ensembles at a time, sitting principal violist in most. I spearheaded two mentorship programs to provide free private lessons to elementary and middle school students in the region, providing lessons to 4-5 students at a time. As section leader I also provided intra-orchestral sectionals for my peers. I was accepted into Eastman Conservatory of Music in viola performance when applying to college, but declined to study neuroscience at UCLA. While at UCLA, I sat principal violist of UCLA Symphony all four years and spearheaded Music in Medicine at UCLA, a program connecting musicians to play at the bedside of patients at Ronald Reagan Hospital.
Why tutor/coach? While a career in medicine is my passion, music is my love. In a scary world of rapidly expanding AI and career instability, music has always proven a strong base of autonomy and healing, and I hope to pass along this skill to students.

Technique and expressiveness are paramount. First lessons are about gauging areas needing improvement and getting to know the student's practice habits. I will suggest etude and scale exercises as a base with coaching for progression, while allowing time to review pertinent passages/pieces for auditions. Lessons are flexible towards student goals, but center around discipline in music. Above all, I am very personable yet expect equal participation of the student.
Target audiences: Beginner to advanced level, all ages welcomed.
