About Valerie
I have a B.A. from the University of Minnesota and an MFA from Bennington College. I've taught English to students at all levels and backgrounds from around the world. My work at the college level has been in the English Departments of Case Western, Pittsburgh, Duquesne and Drexel Universities, among others. In addition, I've tutored undergraduate and graduate students writing essays and theses in topics ranging from Dance Therapy to Bioengineering. I am always attentive to my student's needs because I want to create a comfortable learning environment, one in which they can succeed at their goals and ultimately become self-sufficient.

I start by assessing a student's needs and skill level. If a student comes with a writing project, we work towards already defined goals. Sometimes this means stepping back to make sure the student understands the assignment and is clear about what s/he want to say. At others times, I create a lesson plan. For example, if a student wants to work on writing an effective cover letter, I develop a plan with their goals in mind and provide the appropriate materials. We review various samples and strategies for effective letters together and then the student composes a draft and we revise as needed. The goal is always to make the student self-sufficient. I think my ability to tailor lessons plans to meet a student's goals is one of my assets as a tutor. I have experience teaching students working on basic skills as well as Phds and feel I am well-equipped to meet students where they are.
