About Casey
I'm post-graduate student who, wanting to go into professional academia, wants to gain further tutoring experience before I begin by PHD. I graduated from UEA with a First Class Degree in English Literature, and was chosen for the award of 'Best Dissertation' in my graduate year.
As my interest in literature goes well beyond the scope of my degree, I'd be selling myself short if I didn't profess to be knowledgeable in many areas of literature. This includes:
Classical Greek and Latin: from Euripides and Plato, to Cicero and Seneca
Medieval and Early Modern: This is where I specialise in my studies (I'm currently doing an MA in this period), and what I hope to forge a career studying. From Chaucer to Milton.
Modern: Be it Sterne, Victorian Literature (Arthur Machen is a personal favourite), T.S. Eliot and the Modernist movement... your bread and butter, in many ways.
Contemporary: It'd be a fools task to try and offer an easy definition of what "the contemporary" is, but that traumatized post-9/11 mode of writing we're currently seeing from fantastic writers like Anne Enright and Zadie Smith

I know from experience that its easy for teenagers to get lost at sea when they're suddenly thrown 'King Lear': there's a limit to how much information a teacher can provide through class hours. As such, my approach to teaching literature is based around promoting genuine interest and passion. Not "in the student"; I actually kind of hating that saying. The actual goal is to help the student find something in the text something to get passionate about: something that has them thinking about it well after class has finished. This might be a certain theme, its historical context, the ideas its responding to: I genuinely believe anyone can find themselves obsessing over 'Hamlet' once they're taught to understand /why/ its relevant to them.
