About Laura

Teaching Spanish effectively means blending linguistic skill-building with cultural insight and student motivation. My teaching philosophy embraces a communicative, learner-centered approach that encourages students to actively use Spanish for real purposes. I create lessons that reflect practical situations—such as ordering food, giving directions, or discussing opinions—while also incorporating structured grammar and vocabulary practice to build accuracy and depth. I stress the importance of listening and pronunciation practice early on, helping students develop natural intonation and clarity to boost their confidence in speaking. Cultural immersion is an essential part of my teaching, and I integrate discussions on regional customs, traditions, and social issues from various Spanish-speaking countries to deepen learners’ understanding and appreciation. Authentic materials, including films, music, and news, are regular components of my curriculum, providing exposure to diverse accents and contemporary language use. I adapt my teaching style to individual needs and goals, incorporating interactive technology and personalized feedback to enhance learning. A particularly rewarding moment was supporting a student preparing for a language proficiency exam who improved dramatically by focusing on oral expression and cultural competence. Ultimately, my goal is to empower students to become fluent, confident communicators who can navigate both the linguistic and cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking environments with ease.

Teaching Spanish is about fostering communication and curiosity at the same time. I use a communicative, student-centered approach where the primary goal is meaningful language use. Even in early lessons, students are using Spanish to talk about themselves, their routines, their preferences, and their questions.

I immerse learners in Spanish while offering support—scaffolded visuals, clear routines, and engaging prompts that help them stay on track. I view grammar as a means, not an end. I teach it inductively, using real examples and letting students discover patterns through use, rather than frontloading rules and exceptions.

Context is everything: we explore grammar in songs, social media posts, videos, and authentic conversations. Culture is not an “add-on” but part of every lesson. Whether we’re looking at music videos from Argentina, short stories from Guatemala, or memes from Spain, students are constantly exposed to cultural perspectives that help them see language in action.

I love building thematic units that lead to creative projects—such as planning a cultural festival or recording a mock travel vlog. These tasks give students real reasons to use what they’re learning. I also check in regularly to ensure students feel seen and supported. Some are driven by grades, others by heritage or travel goals, and my job is to help them connect their personal reasons to their progress. With the right support, I believe anyone can learn Spanish—and enjoy the process along the way.
