About Zoë
Who am I? I am a freelance performer and educator. Teaching has been a passion of mine for over 10 years and my practice is ever-evolving – I love learning! What education and experience do I have that qualifies me to guide you in music? I knew I wanted to be a musician from the age of 10 and since then I have been on a never-ending search for knowledge about the fascinating world of music. I soaked up as much as I could from where I grew up in North Devon and then at 16 I received funding to attend Chetham’s School of Music where I could intensively study music performance whilst also getting my A-levels which were in Music, Music Technology, English Literature and German. I then went on to study at the Guildhall School in London where I gained my BMus (Hons). Since 2011 I have been teaching privately, in state-funded and independent schools and at music centres. I perform professionally in orchestras, chamber ensembles and as a soloist in the UK and abroad. I have held a tutoring position at the Baroque Week International Summer School since 2016 and I have collaborated with charities around the UK, including in my home town, to deliver workshops to school-age children. Do I have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? I have had DBS checks at all the schools and centres where I have been employed. I do not currently have a universal certificate. Do I belong to any professional organisations? I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.

What services do I offer? I teach piano, oboe, music theory and general musicianship (including aural). My special interests are in early and contemporary music, including baroque instruments. I also provide piano accompaniment for exams and other performances. What is my approach to teaching? All lessons are tailored specifically to the individual, drawing on my extensive experience and training at a high level of musicianship, thus no one lesson will be the same. At regular intervals throughout the year I check in with students about their current goals and dreams for their progress so that I can provide the most helpful tuition and students are encouraged to contribute any updates on this in any lesson. I find teacher-student relationships to be most satisfactory when students are active in contributions and co-creating plans for achieving their goals. What is the correct length for a lesson? A beginner, especially of a young age, will typically start with 30-minute lessons and the length will increase as the student’s ability improves. A 45-minute lesson is the best all-round time and an hour or more is fantastic for those working at grade 5 level and above or looking to dive deeper into their musical education. If you are not sure what is best for you I will be more than happy to discuss this with you in our trial session. What are my current fees? I charge £45 per hour (£22.50 for 30 minutes, £34 for 45 minutes) online and in-person; I charge £50 per hour for accompaniment. After a trial lesson (see below) I invoice for a half term of lessons at a time (5 or 6 usually), unless we are having sporadic lessons. I try to update this part of my profile regularly but these costs may have changed so I will confirm with you when booking. Do I offer trial lessons? The first lesson is a trial lesson. This is to see if we are a good fit and if I can help you with your aims. The cost for this is the same rate as any other lesson (please see fees above). Where do I teach? I teach online and in-person at my house in Bideford. When am I available? As a freelance performer and teacher my schedule is fairly flexible on the whole, meaning I can normally provide lessons at a time suitable to you. This does mean that I cannot specify availability here though as my schedule is subject to change; please get in touch to see what spaces I have currently available. Which ages do I teach? I teach all ages; my youngest student so far has been 3 and my oldest has been 67. It’s never too late to learn! What levels do I teach? I teach all levels, from beginner to pre-professional. I regularly take people through ABRSM and Trinity exams as well as preparing people for auditions, competitions and performances. Part of my student base also does none of these things and we have a more general goal of getting to the next stage of learning, whatever that may be. Please see above for my approach to teaching. What do I use for online teaching? I mainly use Skype to teach online as I have found this to provide the best quality of video call for music lessons. If your question has not been answered, please ask me and I will be glad to help.

- Ted is a wonderful student. Very keen and informed me of his needs in a clear and positive way. I really enjoyed our first lesson and I am excited to see his progress over the coming weeks and months.Zoë's response :
