About Janet
Hi! I’m Janet — an award-winning acting instructor, private coach, best-selling author, filmmaker, and actor with over 15 years of experience helping performers grow and thrive in the industry. I hold an MFA in Acting from SUNY Binghamton and a BA in Theater with Distinction from the University of Delaware. Over the years, I’ve taught students of all ages and levels at acting schools, universities, summer programs, studios, and national workshops. I currently teach ages 8+. I’m also the author and series editor of 16 acting books for kids, teens, and adults (published by Smith & Kraus), including two Barnes & Noble Top 10 bestsellers in the Auditioning category. In addition to writing, I’ve directed over 20 plays and films, bringing a deep understanding of both performance and production to my coaching. My students have booked roles on Law & Order, Empire, Chicago Fire, Nickelodeon’s All That, One Life to Live, and national commercials for Cheez-Its, McDonald’s, AT&T, and more. I’ve also helped clients gain acceptance into top BA/BFA and MFA programs, arts schools, and summer intensives. As a performer, I’ve appeared in productions across Chicago, New York, Milwaukee, and beyond, as well as in indie films throughout the Midwest and East Coast. I’m a founding member of Fearless Flicks and the Chicago Female-Focused Film Meetup. I live in Chicago, have a cute cat, Sprinkle (meow!), and I love writing screenplays, inventing games, and helping actors build their confidence, skills, and achieve their acting goals.

I currently teach all levels of actors, ages 8 and up. Meisner Technique Shurtleff Technique Actioning Stanislavski TEACHING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY I empower actors to build their confidence and skill by creating a supportive, collaborative environment where they can explore their creativity and expand their craft. I take a personalized approach that honors each student’s unique personality and learning style, encouraging bold choices and exploration over “getting it right.” I bring high energy, humor, and heart to my teaching, and I never hesitate to jump into the trenches alongside my students. I’ll challenge you to do your best work, but always through encouragement, curiosity, and shared effort—not elitist judgment. I see acting as a craft built through study, hard work, and joy. While some may have natural gifts for certain aspects of the work, true mastery comes from the patient cultivation of all the skills that bring a character to life. My role is to be your partner in that process—guiding, challenging, and supporting you as you grow into a more confident, versatile, and skilled performer.
