Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, my lifelong passion for music led me to embark on a teaching journey over 15 years ago—a journey that has since become my greatest love. Witnessing the growth of my students and empowering them to reach their goals brings me immense joy. From ages 5 to 70, and catering to students with special needs, I've had the privilege of nurturing aspiring musicians, whether they aim to pursue music professionally or simply enjoy it as a hobby. I firmly believe that it's never too late to embark on the journey of learning music.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

Music runs in my family. I started on violin at age 6, but I grew up watching my two older brothers play piano. Around 14, I finally sat down at the keys myself and fell in love. That love turned into a career: today I'm a professional television composer and producer, and I've been teaching for over 17 years.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I was classically trained, but I listen to everything, especially soul, R&B, and pop. Composing for television gave me a whole new appreciation for pop. My music has been placed on shows like the Sunday TODAY Show and Access Hollywood, and in coverage of the Milano Cortina Olympics. Working across genres means that whatever style you love, we can explore it together at the piano.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

How difficult something feels really depends on the time and effort you put in. One thing my students consistently love is ear training: learning to play songs by ear. I combine it with practical music theory so you're not just guessing. You understand why the chords work, which lets you learn songs faster and more accurately. It's one of the most freeing skills a musician can have.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Honestly, I don't believe anyone ever fully masters an instrument. There's always more to learn, and music keeps evolving. I still learn something new through teaching. That said, violin challenges a lot of people because there are no frets or keys. Your fingers have to land in exactly the right spot to play in tune. One of the great things about piano is that the notes are right in front of you, so you can start making real music sooner.
  • What are your keys to success?

Dedication, a strong work ethic, organization, and, most important, finding joy in the process instead of focusing only on the end goal. I bring that same mindset to my lessons. Progress comes faster when you're actually enjoying the journey.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favorite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Hiromi Uehara. She's one of the most brilliant and passionate pianists I've ever heard. I saw her perform in Montreal, and she was every bit as incredible as I'd imagined.

Herbie Hancock. He's played with so many legendary musicians that he must have endless stories. I'd love to soak up some of his wisdom.

Questlove. His groove is unbelievable, and he's worn so many hats, from The Roots to leading the house band on The Tonight Show. I think you could learn a lot just by talking with him.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

One of my best music production teachers was also one of the toughest on me. At the time, I didn't fully appreciate what he was teaching me. It wasn't until after we stopped working together that I realized how valuable those lessons were. I still use many of them today, and they're a big part of why I'm able to compose for television. It taught me that real growth sometimes shows up later, so I encourage students to trust the process.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

Students often tell me I'm patient and understanding. I work hard to create a safe, judgment-free space where you can relax and fully express yourself. I've had very strict teachers myself, and I learned that pressure isn't what makes people grow. For me, learning happens through joy and calm, not unrealistic expectations. I also build lessons around the music you love and want to play, not just method books. Whether you're a complete beginner or picking piano back up after years away, my goal is for you to leave every lesson excited to play.
